#MovieGlasses:Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice - Judgmental Review

Yes, the hype is still on, but I guess it's already lit off inside of me.

Batman v Superman is not that good.

I said it, and I guess it's pretty common for several people who watch it to said this - or even meaner ones. I'm not hate it. I'm not hating any movie I've watch. I decide what I want to watch, which means I already prepared myself with perception and perceived expectation about the movie based on several information scattered around the places. And I tried so hard to avoid spoiler-lovers netizen who just like to expressed their enthusiasm to every other people, regarding if they already watch it or not.

This post is spoiler-free. So stay calm, haven't-watch-readers, you are save.

The Main Plot

Cross-storied with the Man of Steel (2013), back when Superman defending the Earth from the attack of Alien troops leaded by Zod, Bruce Wayne saw something wrong with what Superman do. When every people saw him as a defender of the Earth (as we do when we saw the movie), some people, including Bruce Wayne had their own perspective towards him. Some people addressed him as God, while some believe they bowed to a false one. Fast forward into the future (well, its only 18 months since the day when Supes defeat Zod), Luthor played basketball and proposed a project, Clark Kent digging up stories about Batman invading Metropolis, Bruce Wayne attending Luthor's ball and flirted with a woman who is Wonder Woman. After few minutes, the main plot was shown (IF that we could call as plot). When Batman tried to make a sense of him, Supes in some other way, face the bigger problem for him, forced him to do what he didn't want to do: knock back Batman and put some senses in him. In some other place, Luthor played with his new toys.

Brief Insight

Actually its just a battle of a matter of perspective. What Superman see is not the same with what Batman see. Superman who wants to save everyone, in the same time ruined several people lives. I guess it was more like something he do is "for the greater goods", no matter the causes he might made. The destroyed buildings, the broken bridges, a crater on a street, not to mention people who died because of it, buried under the pile of falling buildings, crushed and plumed as the crater made up. Casualties are unavoidable and yet he still can't saved every single one who need help. A sacrifice in order to achieve something greater.

But we know Batman didn't share the same opinion.

He just had one purpose only, either as Bruce Wayne and Batman. He focused on one thing that might be a source of every problem that happened. A stem cell of a cancer. Get rid of it, and every thing might be back to normal. Batman saw Superman as this stem cell, while his actions and its causes are cancers. In order to minimized the havoc on Metropolis (and plausibly also to Gotham City) he must rid Superman.

This story might also trying to tell us - the audience, about the story of Utilitarianism vs Individualism where Superman as an image of Utilitarianism (social-based goals, trying to pleased everyone, for greater goods no matter what happened) and Batman as a projector of Individualism (self-judgment, precautions, self-centered person). But still, there's might be someone else that might be able to brought up this theory better than me.

The Review

First of all, the most thing I liked from this movie is.... the Wonder Woman's theme. God, those guitar riff and drum beats. Someway somehow shadowing her background as an Amazonian warrior, agile, fearless, and a quite theme for beating up a monster or an enemy. As if she stole the movie, because the only scene I remembered is when her Gal Gadot's face shown up with a W-crown on her head and the guitar riff started (except the memorable and memeable "do you bleed" one which already imprinted inside head since the dawn of BVS trailer).

Second, despite a lot of people said that the Batman gone "bigger" which is being bulky and such, with and without Supes-armor, its kinda weird to know that inside the suit, there's Ben Affleck, which indicate how big his body posture is. We might be accustomed with the slim suited, 1-sized body Batman, both in real action movies and the animations. Then comes this movie, and boom, Batty with big body. But also remembered, Rocksteady - video games company - also made large posture Batman, and it looks bad ass. Maybe it's just need some more "air time" for Ben Affleck's Batty to get its audience to accustomed with it.

Third, the cool, well-aged, "I wanna old like him" Alfred. Forgot the typical Alfred we've seen on past movies and extremely forgot that balding Alfred from the animation. This Alfred, with his skills on sarcasm and well dressed skill (I dig the suspender!), is the Alfred I want to be.

Fourth, the plot. Well, somehow I agreed with a major opinion about the plot of the movie. "Batty suddenly *spoils* and then Supes *spoils*. The timeline was too abrupt. Some people may understand it, but I guess a lot of other may not. They need a bit of explanation on what happened, though." I also had the same experience as above, when suddenly I asked to myself what happened with Batty, why suddenly he wore something and do something. Just like been time traveled with Doctor Who and suddenly arrived in the future, observing the un-explainable.

The fifth and the last, Batman using gun. Well, I don't know how they included gun as Batman's weapon. I know Batman is one of those heroes who prefer subdue or make his enemy unconscious rather to kill them. But, hey, improvement is everywhere, so it might be acceptable if Batman use guns, Superman use swords and Wonder Woman uses gatling gun.

Verdict

Despite all the hate comments, negative reviews and long hours sitting inside the theater trying to wide open my eyes instead of sleeping, I had an enjoyable moment. Yes, it might be too jumpy and had less explanation, but it may covered up IF you watch it for the second time or the third time, where you need to be more focusing on the plot or something you missed before on the first screening.

I'm not a good movie reviewer, but from the perspective of an ordinary movie watcher who paid about 75.000 for the most anticipated movie of the year, it was a downer. Too sleepy and too long. Despite there will be the Director-cut edition that will launch on this Fall and it will be R-rated, I guess it may only please several target market: those who love DC, those who are a movie enthusiast, and those who collect limited edition things. Common movie goers might just search the "extended parts" on youtube or similiar pages, and that's it.

But again, I'm just a mere watcher of two giant superheroes, fighting each other and mesmerized by the power of CGI and questioning things unexplained inside the movie.

This movie, I believe, was perfect for those who dig many years on DC's comics. Engulfed by its metaknowledge, the trivias and stuff that most people don't know about. A big hunt of easter eggs and point-the-screen-with-excitement ones because they know what happened or a story behind it, while the other were just stunned.

In the end, it was on customer's decision: are they watch it because of the hype, or are they watch it because they really anticipate it? Different reason, different judgment.

FromTheseGlasses: ARE WE GOING INTERSTELLAR?

Since the dawn of Interstellar days, Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) said human race was a race of pioneer and somehow implicitly said as survivalist. We someway somehow will understand and know how to re-flip the table around when the environment going bananas. Either we fight the environment and the Earth, or we leave it like a passengers abandoned a sinking ship.

Looking for another "Earth" was a pain in the ass, and it was interpreted on the movie itself. It may need some sacrificing and of course a lot of money. But little did we know, or maybe it started to become a public knowledge, several people around the world found, nay made their own way just in order to give us a glimpse of the futuristic future that we always dream of.

What Happened On Space Above Our Head

Or maybe not on space, yet. There were a lot of news and rumors that spread among us, either it was distributed by local TV news or even a simple 140-characters tweet from someone we followed on a social media. Some of them were mainly amazing, astonishing and beyond imagination, and some of them were, sadly followed by sad news - failures, crashes, rejections, etc. Some were only focusing on broaden our point of view on life and universe, some were wanted to make Star Wars and its Galactic Empire to be real.

Space Elevator

Source: wikipedia [1]
The main idea of this hyperspace elevator took a long way back to 1895 by a Russian scientist who got the inspiration by the Eiffel Tower. That might be a mere concept, but as time goes by a lot of another scientists refined the concept, to be more plausible, to be more realistic. From the ground concept on how it would operate to what material they should use in order to make it from impossible to possible.

In 2012, a Japanese corporation which focusing on architectural and engineering said it was possible to made it by carbon nanotube technology as its base material. The following year, the improvement towards the tether or the cable was placed on the discussion table. And in 2014 Google X' R&D begin to designing the elevator itself.

The project Space Elevator has been halt or been cyro-ed due to findings on no manufacture industries that successfully and perfectly made carbon nanotube longer than a meter. [1]

Virgin Galactic

Virgin Galactic is a Virgin Group's company that focusing on spaceflights and beyond, where they developing commercial spacecraft - just like an ordinary commercial airplane, but for intergalactic travels and so on - providing suborbital spaceflights for space-lover tourist and also suborbital launches for small satellites and space science missions. [2]

On 31st October 2014, one of their Spacecraft, VSS Enterprise broke up in mid-air, spreading its parts falling straight towards Mojave desert, California. The co-pilot was dead and the pilot was injured. Based on NTSB there were several factors that may caused the accident: inadequate design safeguards, poor pilot training, lack of FAA oversight, and potentially anxious co-pilot without recent flight experiences. [2]

On February 20, 2016, they announced by their twitter account that they have a new spacecraft, named after old 2014-deceased VSS Enterprise original name "SpaceShipTwo", with several new improvements and more safety features, learning by their unfortunate experience. [3]

Russian's Space Weapons

Russian is rad. And its never ceased me to gawked and shake my head in either amuse or confusion. This time, they planned on making some sort of DeathStar, or even cooler and update: StarKiller. According to Moscow-based News Agency TASS, deputy prime minister Dmitry Rogozin said that they (Russian) tried to 'creating a completely new generation of armaments and military hardware for air and space defense" in order to secure their country from a sudden enemy's attack. The deputy also stated that the world entered a new epoch: space-based armament. [4] An epoch that plausible for things we saw from Star Wars or Star Trek franchise would realized in just a matter of time. Jet fighters, huge motherspaceship, escape pods, etc..

NASA's Grand Tour Campaign and A Quest of Finding Neo-Earth

This is what they had as a plot on Interstellar: finding a new planet, populate it, and turn it into Earth Mk. II. And yes, NASA already found a candidate or two.

The Grand Tour program originated back then at 1969, with focusing on deploying two probes into two different courses: one estimated launch on 1977 will go to Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto while the other one which estimated to launch on 1979 will go to Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune. Sadly on December 1971 the program was canceled, possibly due to highly operation costs and an internal competition from a recently approved Space Shuttle Program. [5]

The first successful probe visit was The Mariner Jupiter-Saturn project (1972) which covered Jupiter, Saturn and its moon - Titan. Then followed by two Voyager spacecrafts (1977)  which using the alignment of the planets and its own gravity as a trajectory or a path in order to move beyond those planets. Right now they exploring the field beyond the heliosphere. [5] [6]

These programs - Mariner and Voyager - gave NASA a big deal of data regarding the condition of the visited planets and its satellites. Giving them a source of juices in cracking the secret of universe, how vast our galaxy really is, gathered evidences about another galaxy, NAY, another plausible, habitable exo-planets that we might visit and stay on. A journey of expanding mind and maybe, just maybe, setting it for a great mind blowing data and discoveries in not so far distance future.

But before all of our heads blown in awesomeness, before the internet got hype because of some unexplained images and videos from beyond our galaxy posted by NASA on their website and went viral, before we said the last goodbye to our brick-and-stone house on Earth because our job needed us to be settled in Kepler-186f, they teased us with something unique and nostalgic in some way.

Recently NASA uploaded a list of high quality 50s-influenced sci-fi hype posters of several planets from our galaxy like Mars, Venus and Jupiter and also several exo-planets like Kepler-186f and Kepler-16b, HD "Super Earth" 40307g and 51 Pegasi b. Not only the graphics looks so beautiful and had some intention-builder for space traveling and visiting them, each posters had its own descriptions and facts based from data they retrieved from Mariner and Voyager. Setting up some expectations and hopes inside our heads, preparing us for anything beyond what we've dream off: interstellar travels, journey between space, planets and maybe galaxy. Picnic on Saturn? Lunch at Kepler-16b and diner on Ceres? Everything might possible in the distance future. And it's probably just waiting for us on the corner of the street.

You can download the full-size image poster of your favorite planet or satellite or maybe download all the posters NASA made here.

2016, What Should I Do?

Rows and rows of questions lined up on a crumbled piece of paper, neglected, nay, abandoned since the day I wrote it. Yes, it was easy to write every single thing that we might do in the future. Hopes and dreams we thought achievable, promises we probably able to keep, expectations we made with full optimism. Yes, we put ourselves in a position that might survive the next following future. We IMAGINED ourselves to survive. But sometimes, like Forrest Gump said, life is just like a box of chocolate, filled with happiness and tenderness and satisfaction, just before we opened the lid and realize there was no chocolate inside except a stack of bills and mortgages.

Life is like a kinder joy, full with prices and world peace..
Well, I haven't watched Forrest Gump, so, yeah.

Anyway..

Like I said earlier, we might made lists of long hopes and dreams and projects and businesses and startups. Yes, there are possibilities it might work, but remember there are also possibilities that it might bunk, crash to ground. Fifty-fifty chance. Just like YinYang. Just like Murphy's Law. Anything could happen.

***

In another nutshell, I also created a list, fill with projects and hopes and dreams. Why I create it? I don't know. I think it was a human instinct to be alerted and aware that we already planned our future ahead and prepared for it, how matter flipped out it will be. As long as we have goals and purposes, I think, human would still alive for aeons.

This list filled with what I want to do and what should I do. A combination of ego and role of society compiled into one, single sheet of paper, scribbled in the middle of the night, with a pen I took from a hotel.

What I wrote here, might be an inspiration to you, the reader, but the main idea was this post will become my reminder, my time-schedule, in achieving something on that far distance future. Some sort of neglected wishlist that won't be decayed or the ink will be ruined by water or faded. A silent supporter in life.

  1. Of course, I started with looking for a job. This one is crucial. I'm almost 25 and haven't got a single job.The only job I ever had was several years ago, as a mentor in a private course, teaching economy and English for Elementary kids to senior high ones.
  2. I want to optimizing my youtube channel. All this time, that channel only filled with liked videos, bunch of music playlists and nothing else. I wanted to make a gaming channel, but my computer was too weak to played recent games. The only possible channel I might make is a channel where I giving some review on artbooks. In Bahasa of course. My english wasn't that good. So I might buy some artbooks, local ones and abroad ones, if I have sufficient money.
  3. Finishing my novel, and find a publishing company that might attracted to my script. It's some sort of slash-of-life-weird-ones-Murakami-esque one, without hard-boiling love story. The bad part is, Indonesian's reader, which are mostly teenagers, much preferred love stories than any possible genre. Or maybe horror. Love story and horror. Two combination that appear frequently on Best Seller's rack.
  4. Find a girlfriend.
That's it. Such a short list of what I want and should do in this 2016. The year of Fire Monkey. Well, lets hope, the fire won't burn my world then.
